Talking About The CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON'S Texas Roots

Source: My SA

Well .... maybe not the monster itself but the man who played him underwater.

Everyone should know by now that I just love the "Creature From The Black Lagoon" so I decided to repost this article about Gil-Man actor Ricou Browning:

Meet a Creature from the Black Lagoon with a San Antonio past

Ricou Browning is best known for his scaly, scary turn as the Gill-Man in the 1954 classic Creature from the Black Lagoon as well as 1955′s Revenge of the Creature and 1956′s The Creature Walks Among Us. But few know that in the ’50s he also made a bit of a local splash as a physical training instructor at Lackland Air Force Base, where he put servicemen through the pool and other paces.

Browning is back in the Alamo City this week for San Antonio Horrific Film Fest 4, the indie horror flick festival that runs Thursday through Sunday at Alamo Drafthouse Westlakes.

These days you don’t have to swim laps or scream to the rafters to win Browning’s favor. After all, he’ll be the first to tell you his iconic role didn’t exactly make him an overnight sensation.

“After the picture was made and released, I’d say 20 years passed and I started getting some letters,” says Browning, now 81, crediting the late fame to the movie’s later TV broadcast.

It wasn’t just because Browning had an un-credited role as a masked amphibious humanoid. He only played the Gill-Man for the films’ underwater sequences, while other performers like Ben Chapman played the Gill-Man in more memorable on-land shots. Still, it was necessary work for a movie about a fish-man out of water. And Browning was perfect for the job.

The Florida native had a background in water shows, having taught the mermaid performers at Weeki Wachee Springs how to perform their underwater magic. When the folks behind Black Lagoon saw Browning flip his own feet in the water, he got the creature gig.

“The way the creature swims is the way I swim,” Browning says, noting that he breathed from an air hose then held his breath for his underwater creature scenes.

Browning would leave Gill-Man behind but stick with the wet. He went on to produce 1963′s Flipper and write for the subsequent TV series, plus direct two of the underwater sequences for the Bond films Thunderball and Never Say Never Again and do miniature work for 1980′s Raise the Titanic.

“I didn’t find (filming) underwater as any different than filming upside,” Browning says.

Just what you’d expect from a guy who’s made a monster of a career in and around the water.

A Colorful Arrangement Of Posters For Cameron McCasland's Horror LASHMAN

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Source: Cameron McCasland

We have spent a lot of time talking about what makes a great movie poster lately so this post actually fits right in with that. One element I failed to mention in my prior articles was "color" and Nashville area film maker Cameron McCasland has opted to use it quite liberally in the posters for his upcoming horror "Lashman".

These babies are quite beautiful .... and let's face it .... the silhouette of a naked woman doesn't hurt. Just ask any Bond movie fan.

Here is the skinny on "Lashman" which was sent to us directly from McCasland:

The Lashman is a tale of Terror. Five friends set out for a weekend camping excursion to find that their camp fire tales have turned into their worst nightmares.

The Lashman features a bevy of fresh faces. including Stacey Dixon (Monster Cruise, Old Habits Die Hard) , Shawn C. Phillips (Assault of the Sasquatch, Haunted High, TV's Look) , Jeremy Jones (Decision, TV's Dreadful Hallowgreen Special) David Vaughan (Butterfly Chasers, 10 Commandments Of Chloe), and Kaylee Williams (Slices Of Life, Zombie Babies).

The movie was filmed on location in Western Kentucky and is written, produced, and directed by Cameron McCasland marking his debut as a feature film director, after a number of music video and television directing work.

Also joining the terror stricken ensemble are Lee Vervoort (Gun Town, Last Kind Words), Todd Bush (Country Strong, TV's Tough Trade) Terry Gragg (Nickel Children, Outlaw Country) Tim Emery (Gun Town), Bob King (Daultry Calhoun, Make Out With Violence) David Chattam (21 Grams, The Last Castle) and Larry Underwood (TV's Dr. Gangrene's Creature Feature)

Find The Lashman on the web at www.LashmanMovie.com , Facebook.com/lashmanmovie, twitter.com/LashmanFilm

It should also be noted that these posters are the work of Dennis Vincent of Denver Colorado.

Criterion's Godzilla: New Developments

by Armand Vaquer

The kaiju world is abuzz at the prospect that Gojira (i.e., Godzilla) (1954) will receive a DVD/Blu-ray restoration treatment from Criterion.

Classic Media released a subtitled Japanese version along with the Americanized Godzilla, King of the Monsters! DVD set a few years ago that received a lot of kudos from fans. Having both movies released and restored by Criterion would be the icing on the cake.

Now, there's word that a fine-grain 35mm print of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! has been found. August Ragone has details on this at his blog.

The last version of Godzilla, King of the Monsters! was the closest thing to a restored print released (by Classic Media) to date, but it was pieced together from several sources and some items were edited in out of original order.

Having a fine-grain print available (provided it is still in good shape) on DVD would be tremendous! (August Ragone explains why.)

Above, the "Godzilla King of the Monsters! plaque at Frank del Olmo Elementary School in Los Angeles.

Godzilla, King of the Monsters! was the edited version by Terry Morse that featured Raymond Burr and was filmed at Visual Drama Studios in Los Angeles in 1956. A commemorative plaque has been placed at the location (now an elementary school).

It'll be interesting to see what transpires!

Facts and Details Godzilla Page

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Miki Hayashi with "The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan. Photo by Armand Vaquer.

The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan is prominently mentioned in Facts and Details's page on Godzilla. My interview with The Daily Yomiuri is extensively quoted.

Also included is a photo of the premiere of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-out Attack (2001) that I took.

It is interesting that Godzilla is referred to as "her."

Facts and Details is run by Jeff Hays, who describes himself:

I am a teacher and writer currently living in Saga, Japan. I was born in the Mojave Desert in California and brought up mostly in Reston Virginia, in the Washington D.C. suburbs. I graduated from Wesleyan University in 1979 and later took courses to be a high school teacher. Over the years I wrote about rock music and had some pieces published in the Washington Post, the NME, The Face and other publications, wrote a guide about sports in the Washington D.C. area, worked construction, did a stint as bike messenger in D.C. but mostly I have worked overseas as an English teacher—at an elementary school in Istanbul, language institutes and a university in South Korea, as a freelancer in Barcelona and for the last 10 years or so running my own little informal school in Japan. Being an English teacher is not a very high status job but it does allow one to travel around and has given me ample free time to pursue the website project that you see here.

There is a misquote. It was posted: "One place he didn’t visit, Vaquer told The Daily Yomiuri, was New York City, dismissing the monster in the 1998 U.S. film as GINO ("Godzilla In Name Only")." During The Daily Yomiuri interview, it was discussed that New York City wasn't included in the travel guide since it was only for locations in Japan. Fans are aware that the real (Japanese) Godzilla did pay a visit to New York City in Destroy All Monsters.

A Gallery Of Great Monster Movie Posters - Part Dos

Written By: Ken Hulsey

As promised a few weeks back here is yet another gallery of great monster movie posters. I like to think of this little collection as "the good, the bad, the wtf and the boing." The reasons for this should become quite evident as you proceed through my hand picked selections.

What did we talk about last time? Was it the elements that make up a great monster movie poster? If memory serves I mentioned a few key items including a great monster (... well sometimes), dynamic action or violence and a sexy damsel (or damsels). Well these images have all of that in spades.

Godzilla vs The Cosmic Monster

You would probably guess that since this is a Godzilla movie poster that it would be one of my all-time favorites ... and you would be right! The image is truly beautiful ... well as beautiful as the image of a giant dinosaur fighting a robot version of himself can be.

Info:

Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla (ゴジラ対メカゴジラ Gojira Tai Mekagojira), originally known in the United States as Godzilla vs. Bionic Monster and subsequently Godzilla vs. Cosmic Monster, is a 1974 science fiction kaiju film. This was the 14th of the Toho studio's Godzilla series (set after Godzilla vs Megalon), it was directed by Jun Fukuda with special effects by Teruyoshi Nakano and the original score composed by Masaru Sato. It is the fifth film to feature Anguirus and the first film to feature Mechagodzilla and King Caesar.

The Phantom of the Opera

Here is a truly amazing movie poster! It is a work of art that would rival anything hanging in a museum.

Info:

The Phantom of the Opera is a 1925 silent horror film adaptation of the Gaston Leroux novel of the same title directed by Rupert Julian. The film featured Lon Chaney in the title role as the deformed Phantom who haunts the Paris Opera House, causing murder and mayhem in an attempt to force the management to make the woman he loves a star. It is most famous for Lon Chaney's intentionally horrific, self-applied make-up, which was kept a studio secret until the film's premiere.

The film also features Mary Philbin, Norman Kerry, Arthur Edmund Carewe, Gibson Gowland, John St. Polis, and Snitz Edwards. The only surviving cast member is Carla Laemmle (born 1909), niece of producer Carl Laemmle, who played a small role as "prima ballerina" in the film when she was about 15.

The film was adapted by Elliott J. Clawson, Frank M. McCormack (uncredited), Tom Reed (titles) and Raymond L. Schrock. It was directed by Rupert Julian, with supplemental direction by Lon Chaney, Edward Sedgwick and Ernst Laemmle.

The Crater Lake Monster

Hey, what's not to love about this! A giant dinosaur rising out of the lake to make a meal out of a couple of lovers out for a boat ride. Never mind the fact that the poster shows a T-Rex and the monster in the film is a plesiosaur ... who cares? Everybody knows a Rex sells tickets!

Info:

The Crater Lake Monster is a 1977 B-rated horror film directed by William R. Stromberg for Crown International Pictures, and starring Richard Cardella. The script was also written by Stromberg and Cardella, and their affiliation with The Crater Lake Monster marked the zenith of their careers.

The storyline revolves around a giant plesiosaur, akin to the Loch Ness Monster, which appears in Crater Lake, next to a small Oregonian town. As people are attacked by the monster, the Sheriff (Cardella) investigates along with a group of scientists in order to stop the creature.

The film is mostly notable for being an example of David W. Allen's early stop-motion animation, and "the best thing about the movie (make that the only thing)". Otherwise, the film was widely panned by critics, with DVD Drive-In calling it "one of the worst giant monster flicks of all time"

Legend of Dinosaurs & Monster Birds

This Japanese import has all the things any monster movie maniac craves, two dinosaurs ripping each other to shreds while smashing a boat to pieces. One of the beasts is even enjoying a mid fight snack in the form of one of the ships sexy passengers.

Info:

Legend of Dinosaurs and Monster Birds (恐竜・怪鳥の伝説 Kyōryū Kaichō no Densetsu) (1977) is a Japanese science fiction film, released by Toei Company. The film featured a giant Plesiosaur and Rhamphorhynchus.

Curucu: Beast of the Amazon

Ever heard of "Curucu: Beast of the Amazon? Neither had I, but the film had one awesome movie poster!

Gamera: Super Monster

So what would happen if Gamera took on a Star Destroyer?

Look I don't remember Gamera being in any of the original Star Wars films either. Maybe George Lucas edited the scenes out because they made the films to long ..... like the Biggs Darklighter scenes?

Anyway.... giant turtle plus copyright infringing spaceship and three Japanese superheroes equals great poster!

Info:

Gamera: Super Monster (宇宙怪獣ガメラ Uchu Kaijū Gamera, Space Monster Gamera), a 1980 kaiju film, was the belated final entry in the Shōwa Gamera series, and the last Gamera film written by Nisan Takahashi and directed by Noriaki Yuasa. It relied heavily on stock footage from previous Gamera films. This movie was made when Daiei was brought out of bankruptcy by Tokuma Shoten publishing company. It was intended as a one-shot movie for children. There wasn't another Gamera film for another 15 years, until his revival in 1995.

Creepozoids

monster movie poster Pictures, Images and PhotosA big bad bug monster takes out the roided out jock while the buxom babes fall out of their blouses in fear. Ummm ..... what else do I need to say?

Info:

Creepozoids is a 1987 low budget science fiction/horror film directed by David DeCoteau, and starring Linnea Quigley, Ken Abraham, Michael Aranda and Kim McKamy (later known as Ashlyn Gere).

Set in 1998, six years after an apocalyptic nuclear war, a group of army deserters take refuge from acid rain in a seemingly abandoned laboratory complex.

They soon discover that the lab was a top-secret government research center, where a hideous (if rather fickle) genetically-engineered monster still lurks.

The Beast and The Vixens

Okay, I know that I just violated my own "no nudity" policy, but this one was too good to omit. I honestly got nothing on this one, but it sure looks like Sasquatch is having a good time!

"Bigfoot Gone Wild!" anyone?

Matt Smith And Karen Gillan Talk About The Upcoming Episodes Of DOCTOR WHO

Source: BBC

With viewers still reeling from the shocking news that River Song is actually Amy and Rory's baby, Bafta-nominated actor, Matt Smith, provides a sneak-peek at what is coming up in the new episodes of Doctor Who.

"I thought it was brilliant because it's such a great science fiction pay-off," explains Matt as he reveals how he felt when he learnt the truth about River Song. "Steven Moffat set it up so well and it now leaves the story open to go in so many different directions. She's Amy and Rory's daughter which is mad, but yet brilliant, and it's going to be really interesting to see how the dynamic between all of the characters shifts."

Despite Melody Pond being kidnapped at the end of A Good Man Goes To War, Matt says viewers can rest assured that Alex Kingston, who plays River Song, will be back and there are more shocks in store. "We get to learn a lot more about River in Let's Kill Hitler" he explains, "and she's on her best flirty form; the River I love! It's certainly Alex's episode and we had great fun filming the scenes, so hopefully we have some good on-screen chemistry."

New monsters are also set to make an appearance, sending children and adults alike scuttling behind the sofa in true Doctor Who style. "I think it's fantastic the way the show can tap into people's primal fears as children" says Matt, specifically referring to Mark Gatiss's episode Night Terrors. "Mark has come up with a really clever idea by featuring a dolls house with terrifying and creepy dolls – it's a brilliant adventure-packed episode and Danny Mays, who guest stars, is superb in it."

The Tin Tin actor isn't the only high-calibre guest artist to secure a role in Doctor Who. Upcoming episodes also feature funny men David Walliams and James Corden. "James reprises his role as Craig, who appeared in The Lodger last year," explains Matt. "He's back in an episode which also features the Doctor's arch enemies, the Cybermen. We had such fun on set; it was hard to keep a straight face when we were filming.

"David Walliams was also hilarious" continues Matt. "He plays a character called Gibbis and he had to wear a lot of prosthetics for the part. Once he was all made up he looked a lot like a giant Mole, so it was hard to take him seriously!"

However, Matt's tone does become more serious when talking about the fate awaiting the Doctor...

"The Doctor died at the start of the series" explains Matt. "He was shot in the future by someone in a space suit and, despite the adventures he goes on in these next few episodes, inevitably he's moving closer towards his own death. Amy, Rory and River are aware of his fate but they have no way of stopping it. I can't tell you what happens but Steven has set up an explosive finale."

But can he reveal if his Stetson makes an appearance? "Yes, I can tell you the Stetson is back; I do love a good hat!" chuckles Matt. "The Doctor also has a new coat; a long green moleskin one. We always wanted the Doctor's outfit to evolve and the coat certainly kept me warm when filming during the winter.

"I still haven't lost my clumsy streak though," sighs Matt. "We were filming the final scenes last month in a cornfield and, needless to say, I was the one who tripped over and twisted my ankle!" If only there had been a doctor around...

Recently married and now a new mum, a lot has happened in Amy Pond's world since she joined the Doctor in the TARDIS. However, there is no respite in sight for the feisty redhead as she undertakes a desperate search for Melody Pond and the Doctor's death edges ever closer. Actress Karen Gillan reveals what viewers have to look forward to.

"I don't think she's willing to accept that's he's going to die," reveals Karen as she describes how Amy feels about the Doctor's impending death. "Amy has such a connection with the Doctor that goes right back to her childhood, so she's definitely not going to stand by and let him be killed without a fight.

"She's also trying to come to terms with the fact that River Song is her daughter," continues Karen. "It's an interesting idea because Amy's maternal instincts are kicking in to play with a woman who is actually older than her! However, it's been brilliant exploring this new relationship dynamic with Alex Kingston who plays River Song. I also think the situation has pulled Amy and Rory closer together; they seem to have a stronger connection now."

But along with this emotional drama, the new episodes also see Amy, Rory and the Doctor meet a number of weird, wonderful and scary monsters that will send shivers up the spines of even the most hardened Whovians. "The dolls in Night Terrors are extremely freaky!" squeals Karen. "They are really disturbing, especially when they were walking around on set! We've also got a monster called the Teselecta in Let's Kill Hitler which goes back in time to try and right the wrongs of the past."

Karen also had an interesting experience filming with comedy actor David Walliams. "I've only ever met David when he's been dressed as a mole," reveals Karen, describing David's character Gibbis. "He was always on set an hour before me because he had to have prosthetics put on and to this day I've never met David looking like David! He was an absolute hoot though," continues Karen. "He was extremely witty and, to be honest, I'm a bit nervous about meeting him when he's not in his mole get up!"

But David isn't the only Doctor Who actor to receive a makeover in the upcoming episodes, Karen also found herself sat in the make-up prosthetics chair. "In The Girl Who Waited I had to spend hours in make-up because I play an older version of Amy. I can't give too much away but it was great fun – despite the early starts each day! I also got to film an amazing fight sequence for the episode," reveals Karen. "I had two weapons and had to take on six Handbots. I worked with a stunt co-ordinator who choreographed the scene and I had to do it in one fluid movement. It was actually quite difficult and I take my hat off to people who do that for a living."

But hang on; is this the same person who Matt Smith describes as wholly unco-ordinated? Karen laughs and says "I've proven I can handle complex choreography so I think it's about time Matt shows us what he can do. Perhaps Mr Moffat can write a tricky sequence for him in the next series and then we'll see how co-ordinated he is!" she says with a wink. The challenge is on...

by Armand Vaquer

Above, Armand with David Hedison at Monsterpalooza.

This is a little short notice, but if you're in the Los Angeles area tomorrow, the Los Angeles Comic Book and Science-Fiction Convention will be featuring some great special guests.

They include David Hedison (The Fly, Live and Let Die, The Lost World, Voyage To the Bottom of the Sea), Judy Strangis (Dyna Girl), Reb Brown (Yor, Captain America) and William Smith (Any Which Way You Can, Conan The Barbarian).

Above, David Hedison poses with G-FAN #88 that contained the interview I did with him. Photo courtesy of David Hedison.

I met David Hedison a year ago at Monsterpalooza and interviewed him for G-FAN. I found him to be interesting and friendly.

The convention will be held at the Shrine Auditorium Expo Center at 700 West 32nd St. in Los Angeles, CA.
