Shopping For Toys In Tokyo

by Armand Vaquer

One of the things that attracts fans of Japanese science-fiction and fantasy movies to Japan is to fill in gaps in their collections of character toys and movie memorabilia.

There are two sections of Tokyo that are my favorite sources for collectibles.

The Nakano section of Tokyo is one major source for monster goods.  Near Nakano's JR Chuo Line station (north exit) is the Broadway Mall.  In the mall (in the upper floors) are several stores of Mandarake.  Each store specializes in genre collectibles.  One store would specialize in manga.  Another would specialize in toy collectibles.  I last went there in December 2010 and purchased a porcelain figure of "Nipper," the RCA Victor dog ("His Master's Voice").

Over the years, I've made many purchases of Godzilla and Gamera-related toys at Mandarake.  (See page 26 in The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan.)

Also, the Broadway Mall (third floor) has another store that specializes in kaiju toys and collectibles, Robot Robot.  Both Robot Robot and Mandarake sell used as well as new toys.

More recently, I found a toy store right on Nakamise Street in Asakusa that sells kaiju collectibles.  And, on a side street off of Nakamise Street, is another toy store where I've purchased kaiju toys.  It is right next door to a McDonalds restaurant (photo below), which makes finding it easy.

The nice thing about purchasing kaiju toys in Japan is that the prices are reasonable, whereas, U.S. importers greatly jack-up the prices.  There are other places in Tokyo where fans can buy collectibles.  Akihabara is a mecca for otaku.

For Ultraman collectibles, the Rox department store in Asakusa is the place to go.  A statue of Ultraman stands at the store's entrance (photo below).

And, in the Setagaya district of Tokyo, Ultraman goods can be found at the Ultraman Shopping District (Ultraman characters adorn storefronts and lamposts). See page 22 of The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan.

"Space Battleship Yamato" In New York

by Armand Vaquer

During my December 2010 trip to Japan,  I was able to see Space Battleship Yamato in Tokyo at the Toho Cinemas Nichigeki in the Yurakucho Mullion Building (above photo).

You won't have to travel that far next month as it will be the closing feature at the Japan Society's Japan Cuts 2012 Film Festival on July 28 at 9:00 PM in New York.

The landmark 1974 animated series Space Battleship Yamato finally gets
a live-action treatment from director Takashi Yamazaki! In the year 2199, earth
has become a wasteland after five years of radiation attacks from an unseen
alien enemy called the Gamilons. One of the survivors is Kodai Susumu (Kimura
Takuya), who picks up a mysterious device one day while hunting for scrap metal.
After discovering a map to a planet inside the device, the military sends out
its last battleship--the Yamato-- in the hopes that it'll be the key to
save humanity. Kodai joins the Yamato crew and quickly proves to be a worthy
team member. With only a year left before the end of earth, what will the Yamato
crew find at the end of their long and perilous journey? One of the
highest-grossing Japanese films of all time, Space Battleship Yamato is
a sci-fi spectacular for audiences of all ages.
Japan. 2010. 137 min., 35mm, in Japanese with English subtitles. Directed by Takashi Yamazaki.  With Takuya Kimura, Meisa Kuroki, Toshiro Yanagiba.

Japan Culture Tour Returns

Abovethe Wako Department Store that was trashed by Godzilla in 1954.  Photo by Armand Vaquer.
by Armand Vaquer

For years, Digital Manga has been offering up tours of Japan.  The Great East Japan Earthquake caused a major disruption in Japan's tourism industry.  There's now good news on the tourism front.

Now, the Japan Culture Tour resumes.  According to Animation Insider:

One year and two months ago, the Great East Japan Earthquake rocked an island nation, and tens of thousands of lives were lost -- countless more displaced. Long since, regional and national rebuilding efforts have sought to clean up and resurrect Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, and its surrounding areas. Also long since, efforts to re-ignite tourism in Japan have been popping up, lending hope to certain industries whose bread-and-butter rests in keeping close relations with the land of the rising sun.
All this to serve as a little reminder that manga publisher and culture authority Digital Manga has officially returned to the business of offering weeklong travel tours in Japan. The Pop Japan Travel (PJT) organization has been offering group tours tailored to western anime and manga aficionados for quite a few years now, and has planned its first group tour for later this year. Want to see a genuine summer festival fireworks display? Taste the freshest sashimi on the planet? Tour the stables of your favorite anime artists at a renowned studio? PJT makes all the arrangements and does all the translation, all you have to do is show up (and pay the registration fee, of course).

For some time, I've been advocating similar tours tailored to fans of Japanese science-fiction and fantasy movies.  The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan was designed for use by individuals or tour companies to see the sites and landmarks trashed by Godzilla, Gamera, Rodan, King Ghidorah, Gyaos, Mothra and others on celluloid.

Japan Times Reviews "The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan"

The Japan Times Online now has a review of The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan posted.

Here's an excerpt:

English-language literature on Godzilla and all the other
monsters that followed is rather scarce, probably due to film company Toho's
legal actions that in the past have successfully blocked the publication of a
number of books. Among the titles worth mentioning, there are Stuart Galbraith
IV's "Monsters Are Attacking Tokyo" (1998), Steve Ryfle's "Japan's Favorite
Mon-star" (1998), and Peter H. Brothers' "Mushroom Clouds and Mushroom Men: The
Fantastic Cinema of Ishiro Honda" (2009). Now Godzilla lover and writer Armand
Vaquer has come up with a guidebook for all those fans who want to turn a trip
to Japan into a pilgrimage to the places that were cinematically trashed by the
Big G, Mothra, Gamera and their friends.

Power Rangers/Tokusatsu Bar Opening In Tokyo

by Armand Vaquer

If you were a kid in the 1990s or had a kid in the 1990s, chances are the family television set was tuned to The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers.

I have to confess,  my daughter Amber was a fan of the show and I watched it with her.  Now, she and others of her age group have gone on to other things in life.  Still (or maybe), she and others have a fondness for the old show.  I have some good news for them.

International Business Times is reporting that a former actor in the show is opening a bar in Tokyo with show memorabilia on display.

According to the article:
Former Power Ranger actor Masaru Shishido is opening a "tokusatsu bar" in Tokyo where clichéd memorabilia and alcohol will unite under one roof, according to Kotaku. The literal translation for the term "tokusatsu" is "special filming," and this usually refers to television shows or movies featuring superheroes and monsters.  The tokusatsu-themed bar will do more than simply pay homage to the Power Rangers series; it will highlight the entire superhero-oriented genre.

Shishido played the role of OhRed, the leader of Chouriki Sentai Ohranger. For those English-speaking Power Ranger fans, this means he played the equivalent of the Red Ranger in the Japanese version, which was known as "Super Sentai." Footage from this series was localized in the "Power Rangers Zeo" series that aired in the U.S. in 1996.

Hario Towers of Kyushu

by Armand Vaquer

Abovethe Hario Towers in 2007.  Photo by Armand Vaquer.
On December 7, 1941, the Japanese fleet in the mid-Pacific Ocean launched an attack on the navy base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.  This attack ushered in the entry of the United States into World War II.

The order for the attack was transmitted in code (“Climb Mount Niitaka 1208”)  by wireless shortwave radio from the Hario wireless telegraph station near Sasebo, Kyushu.

The three Hario wireless towers stand at 446 feet.  Construction on the towers began in 1918 and completed in 1922.  The towers were decommissioned in 1997 and are now in the care of the Japanese Coast Guard.

Plans are underway to preserve the towers as cultural assets to teach future generations about World War II.

The towers were shown in Rodan (1956) during a fly-by scene of one of the Rodans (above) and during the aerial chase with the Japan Air Self-Defense Force.

I visited the area where the towers are located in April 2007 when I went to see the Saikai Bridge (featured in Rodan).  The towers are not far from the bridge (left).

The Hario Towers and Saikai Bridge are spotlighted on page 48 in The Monster Movie Fan's Guide To Japan.

Jonathan Frid, 1924-2012

by Armand Vaquer

Sad news has been reported over at Dark Shadows News:

It is with tremendous sadness that we report that Dark Shadows legend Jonathan Frid has died. Jonathan passed away peacefully on April 13 at the age of 87.

Frid was the original Barnabas Collins on the ABC-TV soap Dark Shadows.  He has a cameo appearance in the upcoming Johnny Depp/Tim Burton feature film Dark Shadows.  He posted at his website that he was hoping to attend the movie's premiere.  It would have been interesting to read of his reaction to the film.

I had the pleasure of meeting Frid at a convention in Los Angeles in 1984.  This news is almost like a punch to the gut.  Frid was as much a favorite to me as George Reeves.  Fortunately, Frid was blessed with a long and active life.  I have an autographed photo of Frid as Barnabas displayed on my bedroom wall.

Strangely, I received a mailer Wednesday from the Dark Shadows Festival organizers.  Inside, it advertised that Frid was to be part of a luncheon with Lara Parker and Kathryn Leigh Scott on July 29 at the Doubletree Tarrytown Hotel.

Monsterpalooza 2012

Above, The Monster confronts Elizabeth in "Frankenstein" in Monsterpalooza's Museum.

It was another fun Monsterpalooza in Burbank this year. I attended yesterday afternoon. The crowds waiting to get in were huge, despite an occasional downpour.

The first person I recognized was Godzilla suit-maker Shinichi Wakasa. We chatted a bit over at The Daily Grill, the Burbank Marriott's restaurant. I introduced longtime G-FEST volunteer Barbara Weiler to him.

While waiting to get in, a gent in a homemade Gill-man suit entertained people in line (below).

Once inside, I made my way to Mondo Cult magazine's table and met with Jessie Lilley. Earlier, I had Don Glut snap this shot of actor/writer/film historian Ted Newsom and me (below).

Wandering around, I found that the usual great exhibits one expects at Monsterpalooza were in abundance. Mike Hill's life-size sculptures (below) of Jack Pierce (with The Mummy) and Rick Baker (with An American Werewolf In London) were terrific.

Naturally, Monsterpalooza had celebritites and big names in the horror genre in abundance. Sara Karloff (daughter of Boris) had a table (below) as did Bela Lugosi Jr.

After meandering around the vendor areas, I made my way into Monsterpalooza's Museum. Here's some of the highlights in the museum:

Above, several portraits of Boris Karloff, Vincent Price and Al Lewis.

Above, "Avatar."

Above, Godzilla was represented by this huge sculpture.

Above, The Monster and Henry Frankenstein struggle on the mill.

Following the Museum, I made my way to the autograph section where I obtained this autographed photo of actress Caroline Munro (from 1977's The Spy Who Loved Me) with Roger Moore (below).

And, had a photo taken with her:

After this, I had to dash off to pick up my roomie in Pasadena.

Monsterpalooza continues today and tomorrow.

If you can, head out to Burbank and have yourself a great time!

The Monstrous Movie Photo Of The Day: Heralding The Completion Of Harvey

Written By: Ken Hulsey

As you probably have guessed by now all of today's posts have something to do with bunnies in honor of it being Easter and all so I decided to pull a rabbit out of my hat, or to be more precise, pull a rabbit themed image out of my collection. This particular image was released by Universal to herald the completion of the 1950 film which starred one of my favorite actors Jimmy Stewart and actress Josephine Hull. This photo was published in movie trade magazines and was never released to the general public to promote the film.

Here is some history:

Harvey is a 1950 film based on Mary Chase's play of the same name, directed by Henry Koster, and starring James Stewart and Josephine Hull. The story is about a man whose best friend is a pooka named Harvey—in the form of a six-foot, three-and-one-half-inch tall invisible rabbit.

The classic stage hit gets the Hollywood treatment in the story of Elwood P. Dowd who makes friends with a spirit taking the form of a human-sized rabbit named Harvey that only he sees (and a few privileged others on occasion also.) After his sister tries to commit him to a mental institution, a comedy of errors ensues. Elwood and Harvey become the catalysts for a family mending its wounds and for romance blossoming in unexpected places. - Dale Roloff

Hull's performance earned her an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actress; Stewart's portrayal earned him a Best Actor Oscar nomination. Stewart later declared in an interview that Hull had the most difficult role in the film, since she had to believe and not believe in the invisible rabbit... at the same time.

This film was ranked #35 on AFI's 100 Years... 100 Laughs.

In June 2008, AFI revealed its "10 Top 10"—the best ten films in ten "classic" American film genres—after polling over 1,500 people from the creative community. Harvey was acknowledged as the seventh best film in the fantasy genre.

I know that there are other "bunnies" out there that I could have posted photos of ... Bugs Bunny would have been an all too obvious choice and Playboy Bunnies Lisa Welch (Miss February 1980) and Patricia Farinelli (Miss December 1981)(both personal faves) would have driven a lot more traffic to this page but in the end I decided that the invisible 6'3" Harvey would be the choice.

I do of course realize that a good number of you have just jumped to Google to look up both Lisa Welch and Patricia Farinelli ... which is to be expected.

HAPPY EASTER EVERYONE!!!!

The Monstrous Movie Clip Of The Day: Wabbits Wabbits Wabbits!

Written By: Ken Hulsey

Happy Easter Monster Maniacs! Everybody loves rabbits right? They are cute, cuddly and make great pets. I'm sure that many of you gave a rabbit as a gift to innocent child this Easter didn't you?

Well you may want to rethink that gift after watching this clip from the classic (?) horror film "Night of the Lepus". It plainly illustrates just how vicious those cute little critters can become! One little science experiment goes awry and bingo ... you have a herd of giant mutant bunnies running around killing campers and chowing down on local cattle.

"Zillions and twillions of wabbits! Where are they all coming from?" - Elmer Fudd

Indeed there are "zillions and twillions" of real bunnies running around miniature sets in "Night of the Lepus" which was one of a group of "critter on the loose" films produced during the 1970s that included "Empire of the Ants", "Food of the Gods", "The Giant Spider Invasion" and "Kingdom of the Spiders".

In the end the residents of Tucson, which include cowboy actor Stuart Whitman, Psycho alum Janet Leigh, Star Trek doc Deforest Kelley, and the dashing Rory Calhoun, decide to electrify a set of railroad track like some giant Lionel train set and "fwicassee" (Fudd) them all. Of course the plan works and the world is saved!

Certainly it would have been in better taste to post a clip from a spiritual film like "The Ten Commandments", "Ben-Hur" or "The Greatest Story Ever Told" on a day like today, but that's not how we roll here at Monster Island News. Instead we like to leave you with visions of giant rabbits covered in fake blood running and running and running .....

The Monstrous Movie Quote Of The Day: Roger Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit 1988)

"Well, you see, I didn't know where your office was. So I asked the newsboy. He didn't know. So I asked the fireman, the green grocerer, the butcher, the baker, they didn't know! But the liquor store guy... he knew."

- Roger Rabbit (Charles Fleischer)(Who Framed Roger Rabbit)(1988)
